Chief Investigator
Dr Angus Nightingale, Consultant Cardiologist at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI), University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol.
Angus is the clinical lead for the heart failure service in Bristol, and runs a cardiology long-COVID clinic at the BHI for people still experiencing difficulties following COVID-19 infection.
Principal Investigator
Dr Emma Hart, Senior Lecturer in Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Bristol, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust.
Emma is project lead for the long-COVID study. She previously ran another study which showed that people with long-COVID have carotid body hypersensitivity, which may explain their breathlessness and exercise intolerance.
Research and Innovation Associate
Dr Hazel Blythe, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Bristol, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust.
Hazel is the recruitment coordinator and will be performing the study visits with support from the Research Nurses and Clinical Staff. She helped Emma with the previous long-COVID study. She is the point of contact for the long-COVID study.
Lead Research Nurse
Laura Gallego, Cardiology Research Sister at the Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust.
Laura is the Lead Research Nurse, and manages Cardiology Clinical Trials at the BHI. Laura and her team of Cardiology Research Nurses will be supporting the long-COVID study.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Dr Lydia Simpson, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston Foundation Trust.
Lydia has expertise in the carotid body and its role in high altitude. She will be supporting Hazel and the Research Nurses during the study visits.

Flo is a cardiology trainee and will be clinical support for the long-COVID study.

Heidi is a registered nurse and is the Clinical Lead at Sirona Long-COVID clinic.
Clinical Academic Respiratory Consultant
Dr James Dodd, Associate Professor in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Bristol.
James has expertise in severe asthma, advanced COPD and breathlessness, and will provide clinical oversight on respiratory screening, characterisation and outcome measures for the long-COVID study.
Trials Methodology Expert
Dr Maria Pufulete, Associate Professor in Applied Health Methodology at the University of Bristol.
Maria has expertise in Trials Methodology and will lead on study design and advise on patient and public involvement for the long-COVID study.
Data Science Specialist
James Thomas, Data Scientist at the Jean Golding Institute, at the University of Bristol.
James is a Senior Data Scientist who will lead the statistical analysis for the long-COVID study.
